VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- In their first game back after a tough six-game road trip, the Vancouver Canucks looked like a team hoping to wipe away some bad memories.Troy Stecher tied it with 1:40 left in the third period and Markus Granlund scored in overtime, helping Vancouver rally to beat the Dallas Stars 5-4 on Sunday.Dallas held leads of 3-1 and 4-3, but Vancouver got goals from Louis Eriksson, Brandon Sutter, Bo Horvat and Stecher to force overtime. The Canucks were coming off a 1-5 trip and have two wins in their last 12 games. It was a tough (road trip) for us, but its good to be back home and this was a good win for us, Granlund said. Everybody in this room is sticking together and playing for each other.Granlund scored 1:27 into overtime by finding a loose puck off a faceoff and snapping it past goalie Kari Lehtonen. That came after Stecher slapped a puck through Lehtonens legs, sending the arena into a frenzy. It was the first NHL goal for the 22-year-old rookie defenseman. It was a good feeling, Stecher said. But getting that win on home ice is a lot better feeling. Im sure you guys can see it throughout the room -- the vibes are up and we feel pretty good.Ryan Miller made 17 saves for Vancouver.Patrick Eaves scored twice and Lauri Korpikoski and Antoine Roussel also scored for the Stars, who wrapped up a five-game road trip 2-1-2.We were right there, Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. We made a little mistake on (Stechers goal), just on coverage going out to the point. If we played that better, that puck definitely doesnt go in.Lehtonen stopped 25 shots for Dallas, which had won 10 straight against the Canucks.Dallas had our number lately, Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins said. I dont know if it was a must-win, but it certainly was a big win for us, and we needed to score some goals. It was good we battled in the third. I thought we showed great resiliency to stay with it.Eaves, Horvat and Korpikoski scored during a one-minute span early in the first period. Eaves knocked in a rebound past Miller at 5:43, but Horvat tied it at 6:05 with a wrist shot off Lehtonens shoulder. Tyler Seguin got his second of three assists with a cross-ice pass to Eaves, who one-timed a shot by Miller.Eriksson scored 3:26 into the third when a Stars turnover allowed Granlund to get the puck to him in the slot. The struggling forward put it through Lehtonens legs for his second goal of the season.Sutter tied it on the power play by finding the net from the slot with Lehtonen screened at 6:06 into the third.A defensive gaffe put Dallas back ahead. Spiller left Week 3s 27-20 loss to the New York Jets with a thigh injury, but fully practiced with the team all week and expects to be ready to go on Sunday. While Australians have agonised over umpiring decisions, including the one Aleem Dar made against Steven Smith in the first innings of the Perth Test, South Africas new spinner Keshav Maharaj cant complain. He claimed his first Test wicket as a result of that lbw call that sent Smith on his way for a duck.Smith, who had advanced down the track, missed his flick and was struck on the pad, and reviewed the on-field decision immediately after Dar raised the finger. Replays showed that even though he had come 2.8 metres down the track, the ball was hitting the edge of leg stump. Under DRS rules, both old and new, Smith was doomed, for an on-field out decision would only have been overturned had the ball been missing completely.Steve Waugh called it a brave decision, but Shane Warne labelled it a bad decision, given how tight it was. Maharaj himself did not comment on the quality of Dars call, but was pleased it went his way. It looked pretty straight to me and obviously any bowler that hits the pads is going to appeal if he thinks there is half a positive thats going to come out of it, Maharaj said. Fortunately it went in my favour.Asked whether he thought the new DRS laws were good for the game, Maharaj gave the answer most bowlers would under the circumstances. Bowlers also need a chance, he said. Bats are getting bigger. Fields are getting smaller. Its nice to have something swing your way. That Smith was the man dismissed only made the something a little sweeter for Maharaj. My first Test wicket is a critical moment in my career, he said. Having someone of his calibre as my scalp is very special to me.ddddddddddddWicket-taking is not necessarily something Maharaj can get used to because he understands his role to be more in the Paul Harris holding mould, especially in current conditions. I did have a chat with Harro before I got here and he had a few thoughts about bowling in Australian conditions, Maharaj said. Im trying to replicate what he did because he was one of the most successful spinners for South Africa. He said your job here is to rest the fast bowlers because conditions are in their favour rather than yours, and you will pick up a few wickets along the way. So try and stop the game from one end and let them strike. That is the way Maharaj operated in Perth, despite the inevitable first-match butterflies, which he were well hidden. I was very nervous on the first day, he said. I didnt know what to expect. Its very intense. For five days youre focused on every ball. The only breaks you get is lunch and tea. Its a proper gentlemans game and a proper mans game and a test of character.Bigger tests are sure to come but Maharaj is expecting them, and preparing to meet them as he did in his first Test. Im a spinner. Im allowed to get hit now and then, he joked. Im just fortunate that my first Test worked out in my favour. Australias not known as a country where the ball turns a lot so Im just going to stick to my game plan and hopefully thats more than enough to help the team. ' ' '
