Canada: 6 W - 0 T - 1 L, Gold Medal After the disaster that was the 1992 World Junior Championship, Canada rebounded to win gold in 1993 despite some of the stiffest competition in tournament history. Canada won six of seven games, including a 9-1 pasting of the Russians. Their biggest win was a 3-2 squeaker against a powerful Swedish side that scored an astounding 53 goals while giving up only 15 in settling for silver. Peter Forsberg set records with 24 assists and an unbelievable 31 points, while line-mates Markus Naslund and Niklas Sundstrom had 24 and 14 points respectively. Naslund also set a tournament record with 13 goals. Many of those numbers were put up in one game, when Sweden hammered Japan 20-1. The difference, once again, was the strength of the Canadians goaltending and their overall depth. Manny Legace was the tournaments outstanding keeper, and he stood on his head to beat Forsberg and company to secure the gold medal. And while the Swedes had one great line, Canada had four solid lines and their depth wore on all their opponents. No Canadian player reached double-digits in scoring, but 15 players scored at least once and 19 of 20 players counted at least one point. Legace was joined on the all-star team by defenceman Brent Tully and forward Paul Kariya, who emerged from Eric Lindros shadow to stake his claim as Canadas most exciting player. The following summer, the top five picks in the NHL Draft were all members of Canadas 1993 gold medal-winning team. The Czechs won the bronze, with Jan Vopat setting a record for defencemen with 10 points.
