CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Left-handed reliever Sean Marshall will have surgery on his left shoulder, which has bothered him for the last two seasons and repeatedly landed him on the disabled list. The Reds wont know how long hell be sidelined until doctors operate on the shoulder next Tuesday, manager Bryan Price said. Cincinnatis set-up man was on the disabled list twice last season with shoulder problems. He opened this season on the DL with a sore shoulder and was activated on April 19. He went on the 15-day disabled list last Saturday with more soreness. The Reds moved him to the 60-day DL on Friday. "There are some issues in there that arent going to get better through strengthening and stretching and inflammatory work," Price said. "He needs surgery to get those things corrected. Once he has the surgery, well have a better idea about a course of action and how long it will take before we can expect to see him again." The Reds also optioned left-hander Tony Cingrani to Triple-A Louisville on Friday and called up right-hander Jumbo Diaz before the start of their interleague series against the Toronto Blue jays. Cingrani is 2-8 with a 4.55 ERA in 11 starts and two relief appearances. He lost his spot in the rotation when Mat Latos returned from the disabled list and wasnt sharp in his two relief appearances. The left-hander has struggled since his stint on the disabled list because of a sore shoulder earlier this season. The Reds are planning to use Cingrani out of the bullpen once he gets back in form. "With a healthy starting five, thats where Tony can help us best this year," Price said. "Weve seen him pitch very efficiently at times out of the bullpen." Right-handed reliever Jumbo Diaz was called up to take Cingranis spot. It will be his major league debut following 12 seasons and 340 appearances in the minors. The 30-year-old pitcher got up to 340 pounds last season, but reported to spring training at 278 pounds. He was the closer at Louisville hoping to finally get a promotion. "Sometimes, you have some thoughts (about quitting)," Diaz said. "You wake up and youre like, Im working hard every day and I dont get the call, but you have to fight it because you never know when the call is going to come. I said, If I keep working hard every day and playing hard every day, someday Im going to get the call." Teammates congratulated him on his long-awaited promotion when he walked into the clubhouse on Friday. "I was so excited," Diaz said. "I stopped and looked around and said, Oh, my God. This is what Ive been waiting for for a long time." Also on Friday, the Reds transferred right-hander Trevor Bell to the 60-day disabled list and reinstated right-hander Brett Marshall from the 60-day DL and optioned him to Louisville. They punched above their weight last year, with a bowling attack that was very young and inexperienced - the Curran brothers, Zafar Ansari etc. Obviously Gareth Batty is at the other end of the age spectrum, but he leads them well.The team also plays on a surface that is good for batting. The Oval is a tough place to go, with the likes of Jason Roy and Kumar Sangakkara in Surreys line-up - although Im not sure how much Roy will be around, as youd expect him to be off with England for large parts. Its also tough for the home captain to manage his attack on that pitch, so Batty, with all the experience he has, is a massive bonus for Surrey. He leads by example with how passionate he is on the field, driving those youngsters forward.Worcestershire (North Group) Brett DOliveira has impressed for Worcestershire in the NatWest T20 Blast Theyre smashing it in the Blast. A relatively inexperienced side over the last few years, that is now coming of age. I have been so impressed with them, winning three of three - two of which Ive seen in person with Sky. Theyve been outstanding; good in the field and with bat and ball.Brett DOliveira is a class act, so too Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Ross Whiteley, while Moeen Ali might get the odd game when not with England. Theyre well led by Daryl Mitchell and New Road is another tough place to go and play. They have a bowling attack, in Joe Leach and Jack Shantry, who know exactly how to get the best out of the surface, plus a bit of pace provided by Chris Russell. Alex Blake might not be too well-known but he is one of the biggest hitters going. Darren Stevens, meanwhile, is like Peter Pan, he never gets old. They have a very good spinner in James Tredwell, and expert death bowlers in Mitchell Claydon and David Griffiths, plus Matt Coles. They have every base covered and are one of the sides to beat in this competition as well as the Blast.Essex (South Group) Ravi Bopara will captain Essex in the 2016 Royal London One-Day Cup Another team that has had a few up and down years, but theyve started 2016 brilliantly under new coach, Chris Silverwood. Ryan ten Doeschate has skippered them to the top of Division Two in the County Championship, while Ravi Bopara takes over in white-ball cricket. They are two terrific senior players to have in the side - Bopara has a good cricket brain so Im sure he will make a great one-day captain.Its a very settled side, with some outstanding young batsmen - Tom Westley, Nick Brown, Dan Lawrence etc. Theres Jesse Ryder, who always has an impact on the game as their overseas player, and Graham Napier, who bowls well at the death. They are perhaps a little light for bowlers though, especially having lost leading ther wicket-taker in the 2015 tournament, Reece Topley, to Hampshire, plus they seem to be missing a real quality spinner.
