SYDNEY S'well Water Bottles 17oz White Marble Elements Sale , July 18 (Xinhua) -- A second Australian senator, who recently gained international notoriety for breastfeeding her baby during parliament, on Tuesday resigned from her federal seat due to holding dual citizenship.
The Canadian-born environmental campaigner, 40, said she just found she was ineligible to serve in office as she also holds Canadian citizenship.
Under Australian constitutional law, a candidate holding dual citizenship is not allowed to run for parliament.
The Greens Party senator S'well Water Bottles 17oz Purple Heat Sale , who moved to Australia when she was 11 months old and has served in the upper house since 2011, fought back tears as she fronted local media at a press conference.
"I have been under the impression all my life that I was not a Canadian citizen," Larissa Waters said.
"I thought that when I was naturalized as a baby, that was it, I was just an Australian."
"I have lived here almost all my life and I was devastated to discover the law had changed a week after I was born and that I needed to have taken active steps to renounce what was my Canadian citizenship, which I was unaware of."
The political blunder was sparked by another Greens senator Scott Ludlam S'well 17oz Moonstone Traveler Canada , after he resigned just days ago for the same reason.
Born in neighboring New Zealand, the 47-year old said he was also unaware of his dual citizenship and was forced to resign after serving more than a decade in the senate.
When Waters saw the events unfold, she decided to check the status of her own eligibility.
"I had confirmation by the Canadian High commission yesterday," Waters said.
"It's pretty weird that someone that's born in a country and leaves as a baby and has never been back, with two Australian parents turns out they have citizenship in that country, so I hope people will understand this is an honest mistake S'well 17oz Silver Lining Traveler Canada ," Waters said.
"I can hold my head up high knowing that the moment I found out, I have taken the step of announcing that I will sadly have to resign both as the deputy leader of the Greens and as a senator for Queensland."
Her replacement in the upper house will be 52-year old Greens member Andrew Bartlett, who has also been plagued by controversy.
In 2003, Bartlett was leader of the now defunct Democratic Party and resigned over alcohol-related health problems, after he allegedly assaulted and hurled abuse at a female government senator.
With 23 other foreign-born politicians serving in Australia, it is quite feasible to think there may be more parliamentarians susceptible to the strict dual-citizenship laws.
As for Waters S'well Water Bottles 17oz Expressionist Canada , "I've spent my entire life protecting the environment and working for equality for women and I'm not going to stop now," she said.

ROME, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The Italian cabinet deferred the discussion of a bill that would grant citizenship to foreign children born or raised in the country, local media said Monday.
Rather than being examined throughout the summer S'well Water Bottles 17oz Shadow Satin Canada , as expected, the draft law would see its legislative proceedings delayed until autumn.
"Considering the urgent deadlines in the Senate calendar, and the difficulties that have arisen among some forces in the (government's) majority, I do not think conditions are right to pass the bill on citizenship before the summer break," Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said in a statement on Sunday.
The draft law would recognize as new citizens at least 800,000 young people already living in Italy, according to estimates by Leone Moressa Foundation based on official statistics.
More specifically, it would involve some 634,592 foreign minors born in Italy since 1998 S'well Water Bottles 17oz Mother Of Pearl Canada , plus 166,000 born abroad but attending Italian schools for at least five years.
These, in fact, would be the two major factors modifying the current legislation, if the reform is approved.
With the new law, the citizenship would be based on a tempered "right of the soil" principle S'well Water Bottles 17oz Lily Wood Canada , and on the cultural participation of the child ("right of the culture").
As such, citizenship would be granted to all children born in Italy to foreign parents (one of whom must have a long-term residence permit), and all those entering the country before 12 years old, but attending Italian schools for at least five years.
Currently, children born to foreign parents can apply for the Italian citizenship between their 18 and 19 birthdays. Yet, they must also prove they have lived here legally and continuously their whole life S'well Water Bottles 17oz White Gold Canada , which can be a difficult task considering the country's heavy red tape.
The reform project is controversial -- most center-right parties and anti-establishment Five Star Movement would not support it -- and the issue was being debated while the country is witnessing the highest inflows of migrants and refugees in decades.
Although the prime minister blamed the busy calendar for the delay, it seemed clear a major reason was the lack of solid support in the senate, which is where his center-left cabinet can count on a thin majority of seats only.
In June, Gentiloni had appealed to lawmakers to swiftly approve what he had called "a law of civilization."
