Canelo Alvarez and Liam Smith are in opposite corners on Saturday, but the pair have something in common: all of their brothers are current or former professional boxers.Mexican Alvarez is one of boxings biggest global names and has stepped down a division to challenge Smith for his WBO world super-welterweight title at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.Alvarez is the youngest of eight children, seven of them boys who became professional boxers. There may be fewer Smith brothers, but all four are active and three of them have fought for world titles compared with two of the Alvarezs.Paul Smith (38-6, 22 KOs), 33, who boxed in London last weekend, is the eldest of the friendly Liverpool family and has twice unsuccessfully challenged for the WBO world super-middleweight title, losing on points to Arthur Abraham in 2014 and 2015.Stephen Smith (24-2, 14 KOs), 31, was also beaten by Jose Pedraza on points for the IBF super-featherweight title earlier this year. It was Liam (23-0-1, 13 KOs), 28 who won the race to become world champion when he stopped John Thompson for the WBO belt nearly a year ago and has since made two defences.Liam, 28, only took up boxing aged 14 and is a keen football player. The likes of Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard are friends of the Liverpool-supporting brothers. But it is youngest Callum (21-0, 16 KOs), 26, who critics say is potentially the best of the Smiths. The tall super-middleweight, who was also in action in London last weekend, is due a shot at the WBC title next year. The Smiths have two younger sisters, one of which Hollie is autistic. The brothers have autism printed on the band of their ring trunks to promote awareness of the condition.Hollie was diagnosed with autism when she was two, Callum told ESPN. None of us knew what it was at the time but we have autism across our shorts to raise awareness of it.Hollies quite clever but she cant speak. There are a lot of different sorts of autism and we just want to help people learn more about it.We get a lot of credit for being four fighting brothers but she is the biggest fighter of us all. She is a huge inspiration. When youre having a bad day you think of what Hollie has to battle and it gives you a lift.It is a boxing-mad family but mum Margaret cannot stand to watch any of her sons in action.Shell do her usual routine, shell be in the bingo waiting for a call or a text off my dad, Liam said about his mums routine when any of her sons is in action. She cant even watch on TV. Shes proud of us but I think her proudest moment will be the day the four of us finish. She sees the sides of us people dont see: she sees us in the house, she has seen the highs but also our lows when we have had losses in the family.Callum believes his progression has helped by having three brothers who also box and all the siblings have the same trainer, Joe Gallagher. Its not pressure having three older brothers all in the same job as me -- its a help. People say I look like an older fighter in a young mans shoes and it feels like Ive been around the game for ages, Callum said.Like Liam, Alvarez was not the first from his family to box professionally. His elder brother Rigoberto (27-4, 20 KOs), 38, retired in 2011 after losing a points decision to Austin Trout for the WBA world super-welterweight title.Lightweight Ricardo (24-3-3, 14 KOs), 34, last fought two years ago and super-welterweight Ramon (23-5-2, 15 KOs), 30, lost a split decision to former world champion Antonio Margarito last month.Canelo, 26, is the baby of the bunch and by far the most successful. Canelo, who grew up on a farm in Guadalajara, beat Briton Matthew Hatton for the vacant WBC super-welterweight title in 2011 and his only defeat came when he lost a majority decision to the worlds best boxer at the time, Floyd Mayweather Jr., in 2013. He has since won two world middleweight title fights before returning to the super-welterweight division. In 2008, six Alvarez brothers -- including Canelo -- fought on the same bill but three of them failed to win on their professional debuts.
