VANCOUVER -- Rumours became reality Thursday as the Vancouver Whitecaps signed veteran Danish goalkeeper David Ousted. Pending receipt of his international transfer certificate, the former Danish Superliga star will be eligible to play in Major League Soccer on July 9. He cant play sooner because an international transfer window does not open before then. "We just felt that if we didnt (sign him) in this window, he would go elsewhere," said Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi. "We felt we were in a situation where it was important to lock him up." Ousteds arrival was expected following several recent media reports in Denmark that linked him to the Whitecaps. Ousted, 28, played 10 seasons in Denmark, including four campaigns in the top-flight Superliga. He earned 35 clean sheets in 103 matches for Randers FC over the past three seasons while helping the club finish third in the 2012-13 Superliga and qualify for the UEFA Europa League. The six-foot-three Roskilde native made 39 total appearances in the final season in his homeland, earning 14 clean sheets. Six of his appearances came as he helped Randers reach the Danish Cup final, where it lost 1-0 to Esbjerg fB. He also made six appearances for Randers in the 2010-11 UEFA Europa League. The Whitecaps pursued Ousted after Vancouvers goalkeeping coach Marius Rovde, a Norwegian who is tapped into the Scandinavian market, learned that he was out of contract and available. Given Ousteds age, said Lenarduzzi, the club believes he can help in the short and long terms. "He sets a very commanding presence," said Lenarduzzi, who has seen him on video. "Hes (about) six-four and is a good shot stopper. His size would suggest that hes quite comfortable coming for crosses in the box." Ousteds acquisition raises questions about Brad Knightons status as Vancouvers starting goalkeeper. But Lenarduzzi said Knighton, who sports a 3-1-1 without a clean sheet, remains the clubs starter for the time being. "(Knighton) is the incumbent right now, and how he plays will determine when Ousted gets to start," said Lenarduzzi. Ousted arrived in Vancouver on Thursday and will join his new teammates on the pitch Monday as the team resumes training following a break. But Knighton, 28, who is in his second season with Vancouver, has a chance to retain his job for at least the next three games, between June 29 and July 7, until Ousted is eligible to play. The Whitecaps (6-5-4) had a habit of giving up leads earlier in the season, but have lost only one game with Knighton in net. "(Ousted) needs to come in and earn a spot," said Lenarduzzi. Knighton said recently that the starters job is his to lose and welcomed the extra competition. With Ousteds acquisition, the Whitecaps have four goalkeepers on their roster, with 16-year veteran Joe Cannon, 38, and rookie Simon Thomas, 23, of Victoria also in tow. The club plans to keep all four until the end of the regular season, and will not be required to make a move based on roster numbers. "Carrying four goalkeepers is not that uncommon in MLS," said Lenarduzzi. "Seattle did it last year. Each of the keepers are at different stages of their careers. Simon Thomas is at the start of his career as the third keeper, and (Knighton) is a veteran of MLS and is looking to establish himself as a No. 1, and (Cannon) is in the twilight of his career." Lenarduzzi said the coaching staff sat down with the three holdover goalkeepers as rumours of Ousteds signing emerged to make them aware of what would happen. Ousteds arrival signals the end of Cannons tenure with the Whitecaps, with the departure date pending as he plays out the final year of his contract. Cannon began the season as the starter but was displaced by Knighton for the second consecutive season. "We sat down and talked to (Cannon) and wanted to make sure that we help him into transitioning into the next phase of his career, if thats something that hes looking to do. ... Right now, hes competing for a goalkeeping spot until the end of the season," said Lenarduzzi. With Ousteds acquisition, the Whitecaps have now developed considerable depth at every position, even with three central defenders sidelined with injuries. "We feel like we have a roster that has covered most positions," said Lenarduzzi. The Caps president said the club still could make another move once the international transfer window opens, but it will avoid extensive changes like the ones that "probably impacted the chemistry of the team" last season. "Like most clubs, were always looking to strengthen the roster," said Lenarduzzi. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- One bad decision cost Mackenzie Hughes his three-shot lead in the RSM Classic.Remarkable poise and a pure putting stroke for the Canadian rookie left him one round away from a wire-to-wire victory at Sea Island.Hughes bounced back from his blunder with a tough par save, three birdies and a 2-under 68 that gave him a one-shot lead over Billy Horschel, Camilo Villegas and C.T. Pan going into the final round expected to feature more strong wind.Everyones going to be fighting the same kind of nerves trying to win, and hopefully, Ill be on top again tomorrow, Hughes said.Hughes was sailing along on the Seaside course Saturday, bogey-free for the first 46 holes of the tournament, when he tried to do too much from an awkward lie in a fairway bunker on the 11th hole instead of pitching back to the fairway. His feet slipped in the sand on his first shot, and it stayed in the bunker in a worse lie. The next shot was so fat it only went about 40 yards into another bunker. And then he three-putted from 50 feet and his lead had vanished. It was almost like I had been punched in the face there, making a triple after everything seemed to be going pretty smoothly, Hughes said.He kept enough of senses to remind himself that he was still tied for the lead in only his fifth event of his rookie season, and there was plenty of golf left. What followed was his most important shot of the week, a super pitch up a steep slope to a back pin to tap-in range to save par, and then three birdies over the next four holes. That pitch on 12 was probably my shot of the day, he said. Because if I follow that up with a bogey, the wheels start to come off even more.Hughes was at 16-under 196.Horschel, who hasnt won since the Tour Championship two years ago when he captured the FedEx Cup, holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole of the Seaside course at Sea Island for a 65. Villegas overcame a double bogey early in his round and finished with four straight birdies for a 64.Joining them at 15-under 197 was another PGA Tour rookie, Pan of Taiwan. He shot a 67 playing in the final group.More than costing Hughes a big lead, that triple bogey made the final round of the year onn the PGA Tour far more bunched than it needed to be.dddddddddddd Ten players were within four shots of the lead, a group that included Charles Howell III (13-under 199) and Stewart Cink (12-under 200).Horschel has slipped to No. 76 in the world since his big FedEx Cup run in 2014. He has worked hard on his short game and feels that turning around, and he believes the windy conditions after two days of calm might have helped someone who hits the ball as crisply as he does.He thinks experience will play a role, too.Theres some young guys up there on the leaderboard that havent been in ... obviously, theyve won other times, but out on the PGA Tour its a little bit different. But it all depends on what kind of conditions we get. I would to have similar conditions today because I think the better player shows up in these conditions.Villegas also has gone two years without a victory, and he lost his card this year and only got into the tournament as a past champion. One week could change everything.Let me tell you something, its 18 more holes of golf. Im feeling good, Villegas said. Ive been a lot more comfortable than I have been. I think its all about having the mind in the right place. My shots when Im calm out there are pretty good and hopefully we can accomplish that tomorrow. I think the leaderboard is jam-packed as always. Were playing the PGA Tour, the best players in the world, but Ive got to wake up tomorrow believing I can do it.Pan, a former No. 1 amateur when he was at Washington, went from four shots behind to a one-shot lead in two holes when he rolled in a pair of birdies and Hughes made a mess of the 11th hole. Pan dropped a shot on the next hole with a wild tee shot that the wind made look worse, but he was never out of position the rest of the way.Hughes, who got married in his only week off this fall, has led at Sea Island from his opening 61 on the Seaside course. He will try to join Cody Gribble as PGA Tour rookies to win in the fall portion of the season, with one difference. This victory earns a spot in the Masters. ' ' '
