Sky Sports darts commentator Dave Lanning has died at the age of 78 after a short illness. Lanning called the first nine-dart finish to be televised, achieved by John Lowe in 1984, and was also a widely-respected speedway broadcaster and national newspaper contributor.He was one of the Sky Sports commentary team that broadcast the first PDC World Darts Championship in 1994 and remained a mainstay in the booth until his retirement in 2011 alongside the likes of John Gwynne and the legendary Sid Waddell, who died in 2012.Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis said: Everyone at Sky Sports is saddened by the news of Daves passing.He was a wonderful man whose commentaries enthralled our viewers, many of whom will remember his entertaining double act on the darts with Sid Waddell.
