CHICAGO - Cubs starter Edwin Jackson said he was thinking about things he shouldnt have been during Chicagos 6-2 loss Thursday to the Milwaukee Brewers. For now, he doesnt have to ponder being pulled from the rotation. Jackson lasted 4 2-3 innings and allowed five runs before being lifted for Jacob Turner, who pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings in his Cubs debut. Jackson has lost six of his last seven decisions and his ERA has risen to 5.74. Cubs manager Rick Renteria was asked if Jackson (6-12) might lose a start or two to give Turner or other young pitchers a chance. "Not necessarily," Renteria said. "I dont think thats anything that, quite frankly, is in the forefront of what the organizations thinking." Renteria did announce that Dan Straily will be summoned from Triple-A Iowa to start Saturday against the New York Mets in hopes of giving Cubs starters extra rest during a stretch of 33 games in 34 days. When the Cubs signed Jackson to a four-year contract before last season they were hoping the veteran right-hander would eat innings and provide some stability in the rotation. That hasnt happened, and Thursdays start was Jacksons sixth out of 25 where he threw fewer than five innings. But if hes worried that means hell lose some turns in the rotation, Jackson isnt showing it. "At this point you just have to try to worry about the things you control, like I stress all the time," Jackson said. "And thats just worrying about yourself rather than worrying about doing the things you can do once you have the ball." His opponent did a better job of that. Mike Fiers (2-1) struck out a career-high 14 in six scoreless innings and walked only one in his second start this season. Fiers and three Brewers relievers combined for 16 strikeouts, but the Milwaukee starter set the tone. "You could see it right off with him, the first couple of innings," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "You see how guys are swinging at his fastball and when you see theyre late on the fastball, you know everything is going to be working." Khris Davis and Mark Reynolds homered to support Fiers and the Brewers, who are 2 1-2 games ahead of Pittsburgh and St. Louis in the NL Central. "Personally, it was a great outing, a lot of strikeouts, but the big thing is getting the win," Fiers said. The NFL announced Wednesday that Davis has been suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. It is his second substance-abuse suspension -- he sat out the final four games of the 2011 season after testing positive for marijuana. "I would like to clarify the circumstances that resulted in my current suspension," Davis said in a statement released through the NFL Players Association. "In the past, I made the mistake of knowingly ingesting a banned substance. For over two years, Ive worked very hard to eliminate marijuana from my life, and I have not had a positive test for it since 2011. "Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I took a supplement that contained a banned substance. I now know that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and may contain banned substances. The NFL Policy is strict, and not knowing that a supplement might contain a banned substance doesnt excuse a violation of the policy.dddddddddddd" NFL players are regularly briefed on the leagues drug policy. Davis is a six-year veteran, a second-round selection by the Redskins in the 2008 draft. Davis said he has been working with the league and players union to "resolve this violation" and that he will be permitted to apply for reinstatement in the fall. "I look forward to staying in football shape, remaining in compliance with the NFL policy, and having a chance to get back on the field to contribute to a teams success next season," the statement said. Davis appears unlikely to return to the Redskins. He is set to become a free agent next month, having signed a one-year deal in 2013 with the hope of producing big numbers that he could parlay into a hefty multiyear contract when he hit the open market. Instead, he caught only seven passes and was passed on the depth chart by rookie Jordan Reed. Davis also admitted to nodding off during team meetings and voiced a desire to play for another team after he was put on the inactive list for multiple games.
